Required to transport hazardous materials in amounts that require placarding. Includes a TSA Security Threat Assessment.
What it covers
The Hazardous Materials (H) endorsement is required to transport materials that require hazmat placards under 49 CFR Part 397 — including flammable liquids, gases, explosives, radioactive materials, and other regulated hazmat.
Federal requirements
- Pass the HazMat knowledge test (typically ~30 questions).
- Submit fingerprints and complete a TSA Security Threat Assessment.
- Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.
- Renew the endorsement every 5 years (some states require sooner).
- Complete ELDT (federal) for the H endorsement if applying for the first time.

TSA Security Threat Assessment fee is around $86.50 (federal). State knowledge-test fees vary $5-$25.

How long is the HazMat endorsement valid?
Up to 5 years, then you must reapply and pass a new TSA background check.
Can I take the HazMat test if I'm not a U.S. citizen?
Lawful permanent residents qualify. Other immigration statuses do not.
Does HazMat require ELDT?
Yes — first-time HazMat applicants on or after Feb 7, 2022 must complete FMCSA-registered ELDT theory training.
