How to Get a Texas CDL
A practical step-by-step. Times and fees match what most applicants experience in 2026.
- Decide which CDL class you need — A, B, or C. Compare classes.
- Get your DOT medical card. Find a Certified Medical Examiner on the FMCSA national registry. Cost typically $80-$200.
- Complete federal ELDT theory training for your CDL class through an FMCSA-registered provider. ELDT is required for first-time applicants.
- Study the Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle Drivers Handbook. Download the TX CDL handbook (PDF).
- Pass the General Knowledge test (and Air Brakes / Combination if applicable). Take it at a Texas DPS office. Use our practice tests first.
- Get your CLP (Commercial Learner's Permit). Hold it for at least 14 days before the skills test (federal rule).
- Practice driving with a CDL-holder accompanying you, per CLP rules.
- Complete ELDT behind-the-wheel training if you haven't already.
- Schedule the CDL skills test — pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control, on-road.
- Pass the skills test and pay the CDL fee. Walk out with your Texas CDL.
