How to Get a Texas CDL

A practical step-by-step. Times and fees match what most applicants experience in 2026.

  1. Decide which CDL class you need — A, B, or C. Compare classes.
  2. Get your DOT medical card. Find a Certified Medical Examiner on the FMCSA national registry. Cost typically $80-$200.
  3. Complete federal ELDT theory training for your CDL class through an FMCSA-registered provider. ELDT is required for first-time applicants.
  4. Study the Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle Drivers Handbook. Download the TX CDL handbook (PDF).
  5. Pass the General Knowledge test (and Air Brakes / Combination if applicable). Take it at a Texas DPS office. Use our practice tests first.
  6. Get your CLP (Commercial Learner's Permit). Hold it for at least 14 days before the skills test (federal rule).
  7. Practice driving with a CDL-holder accompanying you, per CLP rules.
  8. Complete ELDT behind-the-wheel training if you haven't already.
  9. Schedule the CDL skills test — pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control, on-road.
  10. Pass the skills test and pay the CDL fee. Walk out with your Texas CDL.
